From Home Plate Day 1 – VOB – Umpire Robert Slabinski

Dec 27: Game day! Actually Game night. We will play 1 game tonight, under the lights. But first our day’s events. We wake up to find that some of the kids from Germany moved their mattresses out of the bunk house and into the meadow. Guess they spent the night sleeping under the stars!

For lunch we had chicken, rice and rolls, simply DELICIOUS!! By mid afternoon, it was time to head to the fields. We had to transport about 70 kids, coaches, cooks, fans, etc. What a sight to behold.
This field could be anywhere in America. We had a DJ, a band for pre game entertainment, a snack bar, great food and about 400 people in attendance. Both teams took infield, we had 3 umpires and a ceremonial first pitch. But as we all know, I am in Capetown, South Africa!!

The game was a see-saw battle between Pole-2-Pole of South Africa and the German Baseball Academy. Final score was 16 – 9, victory German Baseball Academy a winner. We had “Denver” on the plate, Gino at first and all the way from the USA was Bob at third.

We will have 8 more games between the 2 teams. Tomorrow will bring a doubleheader at a local field. I was certainly in my happy place, calling a game, under the lights with the major difference, we had a spectacular view of Table Mountain in centerfield.
